Fitting and choosing your patch

Iron-on or sew-on: the right method

The iron-on version goes on in a few minutes with a household iron. First, set the iron to a very low temperature. Work dry, with no steam at all. Steam softens the glue and weakens the bond. Then peel off the white film on the back of the patch. Place the patch on the fabric and press the iron on it for a few seconds. Finally, check that the edges are firmly stuck down.

On a garment you wash often, a few stitches around the edge will add strength. The sew-on version is fixed by hand or with a sewing machine. It suits materials that do not handle heat well, such as synthetic fabric or faux leather. It is also the safer choice on a cap or thick fabric, where the iron cannot press evenly. Follow the edge with a thread of a similar colour to keep the stitches discreet.

Three colours, three sizes

The three colours do not share the same length. The Black is 51 mm long, the most discreet of the range. It fits well on the front of a cap or on a chest pocket. The Mars Red is 65 mm long and reads better from a distance. The Blue Marlin is the largest, at 75 mm long. It fills the back of a jacket, a backpack or a rod sleeve nicely. Each colour comes in both fixing versions. For a cap, the Black remains the simplest choice. On a bag or a jacket, the Blue Marlin gives you more visible surface. Measure the area you want to cover before you choose your colour.
