Our review of the Salmo Sweeper Sinking
The Sweeper is a glider that immediately stands out from the rest thanks to the wide amplitude of its side-to-side movements: it really moves much further sideways than most competitors, and its 180° turns trigger strikes from pike that have refused all other lures. The rear stabilizing fins improve casting stability and give it that distinctive gliding behavior. A must-have in your tackle box alongside a Slider.
What you need to know
- Type: sinking glider, diving depth around 0.5 to 1 m
- Wide lateral movement: greater than most gliders on the market
- 180° turns: the lure completely turns to face the following predator, triggering lateral flashes
- Flanking vibration during direction changes: an irresistible visual signal
- Stabilizing fins: improve aerodynamics during casting and create the gliding effect in the water
- Wounded fish action: due to its specific balance and carefully designed body shape
- Retrieve: moderate jerks are enough, little effort required to trigger its action
- Available colors: Real Pike, Holo Smelt
On the water: extreme movement, aggressive pike strikes
The Sweeper’s swimming action: wider movement, less effort
The Salmo Sweeper Sinking belongs to a generation of gliders that pushes lateral movement beyond what classic models offer. Where most gliders require aggressive rod action to be displaced, the Sweeper responds to moderate jerks by swinging widely from side to side and performing 180° turns. These tight turns create successive flashes along the lure’s flanks, mimicking a panicked baitfish. The subtle body vibration during direction changes is a key behavioral feature: a slight oscillation of the body on each turn that further enhances the impression of a distressed fish. This action is especially effective on pike that have refused more aggressive presentations and tend to respond better to a slow, unbalanced lure.
Stabilizing fins and sinking version: controlling depth
The fins positioned at the rear of the Sweeper serve two complementary purposes. In flight, they stabilize the lure and improve its aerodynamics, resulting in longer and more accurate casts. In the water, they contribute to the Sweeper’s signature gliding effect by generating lift during lateral slides. The sinking version slowly descends after splashdown, allowing anglers to target pike holding between 0.5 and 1 meter deep. By waiting a few seconds before starting the retrieve, the presentation depth can be adjusted depending on the spot.
Two colors for two fishing conditions
The Real Pike color pattern replicates a pike with highly realistic detail. This imitation style works particularly well in clear water and especially in summer and late season when pike become territorial and opportunistic. The Holo Smelt uses an holographic finish that produces strong light flashes on every movement, making it very effective in low-light conditions.
