Carbon research: Work carried out with UK universities

The story of the brand

From Liverpool to tournament casting

In 1989, Steve Harrison opened the doors of Harrison Rods in Liverpool. Fishing was only starting to see what carbon fibre could bring. His idea was simple: use this material to make rods and blanks that live up to demanding anglers.

Carp soon became his field. Harrison launched the Ballista, a carp blank much slimmer than those on the market at the time. The Torrix series was then developed with Terry Edmonds, a record holding distance caster. The Trebuchet, named after the medieval siege engine, pushed this search for distance further still.

More than thirty years on, every Harrison blank still comes out of an English workshop. The WCS25 SE is based on the blank that won the 2025 casting world championship, with a Trebuchet UFR tip. Today's series run from carp to barbel and catfish, with Avon, stalker and spod models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about the brand

Who founded the Harrison Advanced Rods brand?

Steve Harrison founded the brand in Liverpool in 1989. Fishing was then discovering the potential of carbon fibre. His aim was to use it to make rods and blanks for demanding anglers.

The brand also works alongside Triple H Composites, its sister company. It supplies carbon prepreg to specialist makers and to universities.

Where are Harrison rod blanks made?

Harrison blanks are designed and made in the brand's own factory in Liverpool, England. The work starts with rolls of carbon prepreg. The sheets are then cut and rolled by hand. Many brands have handed this step to outside suppliers, while Harrison still carries it out in the UK.

How is the Harrison Torrix blank built?

The Torrix was developed with Terry Edmonds, a record holding distance caster. Its blank combines high modulus carbon with thin unidirectional scrims. These scrims are laid off axis around the main fibres, like a rib cage. They add strength and control torque. The surface has a 1K woven finish from butt to tip.

Harrison, an English maker of carbon blanks

Harrison Advanced Rods is an English brand of rods and rod blanks. It has been based in Liverpool since 1989. Dr Steve Harrison set it up to make use of carbon fibre, then a new material in fishing. The brand designs most of its range for carp fishing. Its series also cover spod, marker, stalking, barbel and catfish work.

Harrison sells bare blanks to rod builders, in the UK and abroad. Each series comes in several lengths and test curves. The catalogue stays focused on carp and other big freshwater fish.

A craft built around carbon

Harrison makes its own carbon rod blanks in its Liverpool factory. The work starts with rolls of carbon prepreg. The sheets are cut and then rolled by hand. Many brands have handed this step to outside suppliers. Harrison keeps it in England.

The brand follows research on composites closely. It works with UK universities. Its sister company, Triple H Composites, supplies carbon to specialist makers and to universities. These exchanges feed into the design of the blanks.
