Product description

Our take on ProWrap ColorFast

ColorFast solves the problem that ruins so many first wraps: the colour shifting the moment the finish goes on. You lay your thread, you move straight to epoxy, and the shade stays exactly as it was on the spool. With over 80 colours available in size A as well as size D, this is the thread we recommend for a first rod build as much as for decorative wrapping.

Size A at .008", size D at .010"

  • ProWrap ColorFast nylon thread, factory pre-treated, usable without color preserver
  • Size A: .008" diameter (~0.20 mm), 1 oz spool of 650 yards
  • Size D: .010" diameter (~0.25 mm), 1 oz spool of 300 yards or 4 oz spool of 2300 yards
  • Over 80 colours, pressure dyed for a consistent shade from one spool to the next
  • UV treatment that limits fading over time
  • Same tensile strength as standard ProWrap nylon
  • Uses: guide wraps, trim bands, decorative wrapping
  • Works for hand wrapping as well as on a power wrapper

The thread that keeps its colour under epoxy

Why you can skip the color preserver step

Standard nylon thread soaks up resin during finishing and turns translucent. The shade darkens noticeably and the carbon of the blank ends up showing through the wraps. ColorFast is pre-treated so the fibre stays opaque, and you therefore move straight on to finishing varnish with no intermediate preserver coat. You save a step and several hours of drying time on every rod. The difference shows most on light shades laid over a dark blank, where standard nylon turns greyish.

Size A or size D: how to choose

Diameter matters more than colour when picking a winding thread, since it decides how many turns are needed to cover a guide foot.

  • Size A: discreet on light rods, trout, perch and fine fly lines, it sits better against the foot of small guides
  • Size D: covers faster, forgives uneven tension, the logical choice on powerful rods and large guides

If you are building your first rod, size D remains easier to master. The 300 and 650 yard spools comfortably cover several complete builds, while the 4 oz 2300 yard spool suits anyone running the same colour across many rods. Whichever diameter you choose, even wraps depend as much on tension as on the thread itself, and a wrapping bench from our rod building tools helps a great deal once you are working through a series.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a color preserver with ProWrap ColorFast thread?

No. The factory treatment stops the thread turning translucent under resin, so you can apply your finishing varnish straight onto the wrap. Adding a color preserver brings nothing extra to this thread.
